Add a sight, rest, release, stabilizer, and a dozen properly fletched arrows, and the real total usually lands a few hundred dollars above whatever price tag is on the bow itself.
These key factors affect compound bow affordability
The bare bow price is only part of the setup cost
The bow alone is just the starting number. A sight, arrow rest, release aid, stabilizer, and quiver typically add $200-$500 on top, and a first set of arrows cut and fletched to the right length runs another $80-$150. Shops rarely quote the all-in total up front, so it's easy to walk in expecting to spend $600 and walk out having spent closer to $1,000.
Draw weight and length need to fit the shooter
A bow is set up around one person's draw length and arm strength, which limits how easily it resells if the original buyer changes or the bow was sized wrong to begin with. It's also why a used bow bought online, sight unseen, is riskier than most other secondhand gear.
Tuning and arrows are recurring costs
Beyond the purchase, expect a paper-tuning session at a shop, usually $30-$75, broadheads once hunting season rolls around, and a new string every couple of years. Many states also require a separate hunting license or a bow-specific certification on top of whatever the equipment costs, so it's worth checking your state's wildlife agency before assuming the bow is the only line item.
