Equipment complexity drives both upfront and running cost
A fish-only saltwater setup needs a heater, filter, and protein skimmer at minimum. Add coral and you're also buying high-output reef lighting and usually a stronger circulation pump or a sump, and all of that hardware runs nonstop, adding roughly $15 to $30 a month in electricity on top of the higher price tag it carried at checkout.
Livestock costs scale with what you keep
Basic saltwater fish run $15 to $50 each, not far off from freshwater pricing. Coral is where the budget stretches: a common soft coral frag starts around $20, but a sought-after color morph or SPS species can run well past $100 for a piece the size of a thumbnail. Most reef keepers keep buying long after the tank is technically finished, so livestock spending rarely actually stops.
Water chemistry requires steady maintenance spending
Coral needs stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels, which means regular water changes with a real salt mix rather than tap water, at roughly $1 a gallon, plus test kits whose reagents need restocking as they run low. Skip that routine and it isn't money saved so much as a die-off deferred, and cleaning that up costs more than the maintenance would have.
