By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

A queen mattress can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a basic innerspring to several thousand for a premium memory foam or hybrid build, and sleep experts generally put the replacement window at 7 to 10 years, sooner if you're waking up with new aches or the mattress visibly sags. Because it's a one-time purchase rather than a recurring bill, this calculator weighs the price against roughly three months of your budget instead of a monthly commitment.
These key factors affect mattress affordability
Income and expenses
What actually determines whether a mattress is affordable is what's left over after rent, debt payments, and the rest of your regular bills, not the number on the price tag by itself.
Type and materials
Innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses each span a wide price range on their own, and within any one type, the density and quality of the materials drive most of the cost difference more than the label does. Foam density is usually listed in pounds per cubic foot on the spec sheet, and a CertiPUR-US certification is a reasonable signal of foam quality when you're comparing unfamiliar brands. None of that guarantees a higher price buys a better night's sleep for your particular body and sleep position, though - a $600 mattress you actually like beats a $2,000 one you don't.
Sales, trials, and financing
Mattress retailers run sales constantly, especially around major holidays, so the listed price is rarely what anyone actually pays. Trial periods of 90 to 365 nights are standard among the bigger online brands, letting you return one that doesn't work out. Financing is common too, often through a store card with a deferred-interest promotion. Paying in cash means the mattress costs exactly its price. Financing only stays that cheap if the full balance is paid off before the promotional window closes, since deferred-interest plans typically charge interest retroactively on the entire original balance if even a small amount is left over when the promo ends.
How to use your results
- Compare prices around major sales periods, since mattresses are discounted often.
- Include your existing debt for a more realistic picture of what's left to spend.
Ways to increase how much mattress you can afford
- Shop around major sales events, when discounts on mattresses are typically deepest.
- Take advantage of a trial period if offered, rather than paying for a premium option upfront on guesswork.
- Pay down existing debt first to free up more of your budget.
