By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

A standard tank water heater costs less to install than a tankless unit, though tankless models tend to save on energy bills and take up a fraction of the closet space over the long run. A new water heater is a one-time cost rather than a recurring bill, so this estimate weighs the total against roughly three months of your budget instead of treating it like a monthly commitment.
These key factors affect water heater costs
Income and expenses
A water heater usually fails without warning rather than as a planned purchase, so the question that matters most is whether paying for it now still leaves your other bills and any debt you're carrying in a comfortable spot, not just whether the estimate looks big or small on its own.
Tank vs. tankless
The upfront math favors a standard tank, since it costs less to buy and install than a tankless unit. The lifetime math can tip the other way: tankless units heat water only on demand, commonly last 20 years or more against roughly a decade for a tank, and take up a fraction of the space. It's worth pricing both as a total cost of ownership rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Fuel type and sizing
Sticking with your current fuel type and a similar tank size keeps this a straightforward swap. Switching from electric to gas, or the other way around, usually means running a new gas line and adding venting, which adds real labor cost, and upsizing capacity for a bigger household, or for a tankless unit that needs to handle more than one fixture at once, does the same. In earthquake-prone states like California, code also requires the tank to be strapped in place, a small but easy-to-overlook line item on the quote.
How to use your results
- Compare a tank and tankless quote side by side for your specific household size.
- Ask whether a fuel-type switch adds venting or gas line costs to the quote.
Ways to make a water heater replacement more affordable
- Get quotes from multiple plumbers, since installation pricing varies for the same unit.
- Stick with your current fuel type and tank style to avoid added installation costs.
- Check for utility rebates on efficient or tankless models before you buy.
