By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

A modern living room with a wall-mounted TV above a built-in linear electric fireplace with visible flame, flanked by cream armchairs and a teal sofa.

A gas fireplace insert typically costs less to install than a wood-burning fireplace that needs a chimney or masonry work, while an electric fireplace is usually the cheapest option upfront but costs more to run for the same heat output. It's a one-time purchase rather than an ongoing bill, so the calculator compares the total to roughly three months of your budget instead of a single month's paycheck.

These key factors affect fireplace costs

Income and expenses

A fireplace is a want rather than a need for most households, which is exactly why it's worth weighing the cost against your full financial picture rather than just whether you can technically cover the invoice. What's left after rent or the mortgage, debt payments, and everyday expenses is the number that actually decides whether this is a comfortable purchase or a stretch.

Gas vs. wood-burning vs. electric

A gas insert typically costs more upfront than an electric unit but less to run over time for the same heat output. A wood-burning fireplace or insert usually needs the most extensive - and most expensive - installation, since it requires proper venting or a chimney, plus regular chimney cleaning afterward to clear creosote buildup and run safely.

New install vs. retrofit

Adding a fireplace where none existed, including venting, framing, and a chimney or flue, costs considerably more than converting or upgrading one that's already there. A gas fireplace also needs its own gas line run to the location, which is an added cost if the room doesn't already have one nearby, and most jurisdictions require a permit and inspection for new gas lines or venting.

How to use your results

  • Get quotes for both a new install and a retrofit if you have an existing fireplace to convert.
  • Include your existing debt for a realistic picture of what's actually left to spend.

Ways to make a fireplace more affordable

  • Get quotes from multiple contractors, since installation costs can vary substantially.
  • Consider converting an existing wood-burning fireplace to gas rather than a full new install.
  • Choose an electric fireplace if venting or a chimney would add significant cost.
