By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

Whether collision repair is actually affordable depends almost entirely on whose insurance is footing the bill. If the other driver caused the accident, their liability coverage pays the shop directly and your real cost can be zero dollars. Pay through your own policy instead, or skip insurance altogether, and the honest number is either your deductible or the full estimate - two very different situations, so enter the one that matches yours.
These key factors affect collision repair affordability
Damage severity
A scuffed bumper or a shopping-cart dent is a $500-$1,500 job. Panel replacement with paint and blending climbs to $1,500-$4,000. Structural or frame damage sits in its own tier, often $6,000-$10,000, and if that figure creeps close to the car's actual cash value, don't be surprised if the insurer declares it a total loss and cuts a check instead of authorizing repairs.
Insurance deductible vs. paying out of pocket
Filing on your own policy means your real cost is the deductible, usually $500-$1,000, with the insurer covering the rest. Enter the deductible, not the shop's full estimate, if that's your situation - conflating the two is the single most common mistake people make with this number.
OEM vs. aftermarket parts
Insurers frequently push shops toward aftermarket body panels to hold claim costs down, and on a car under five years old that can shave hundreds off the repair while also shaving something off resale value later, since some buyers and appraisers discount a car known to carry non-OEM panels. Ask which the shop plans to use before signing off on the estimate.
How to use your results
- If you're paying out of pocket rather than through insurance, double check that the number you entered reflects that, since the two situations produce very different affordability pictures.
- Get at least two shop estimates, since collision repair quotes for the same damage can vary by 20-30% between shops.
- If your deductible is close to the total repair cost, filing a claim may not be worth it - compare the deductible to the repair estimate before deciding whether to involve insurance at all.
Ways to make collision repair more affordable
- Ask if the shop can use quality aftermarket or recycled parts instead of OEM where safety isn't a concern, which can meaningfully lower the bill.
- If the damage is purely cosmetic, ask about paintless dent repair, which costs much less than traditional bodywork for dents without paint damage.
- Get multiple estimates before committing - insurance-preferred shops and independent body shops often quote differently for identical work.
- If another driver is at fault, confirm their insurance is covering the full repair before assuming any cost falls on you.
