By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

EMBA programs typically cost $70,000 to $150,000 in total. The top-ranked ones, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, can run past $200,000. What makes this degree different from nearly every other one on this site is that you keep your full-time job and salary the entire time, and because of that, employer sponsorship covering 50 to 100 percent of tuition is genuinely common rather than a rare perk. This estimate weighs the monthly tuition amount you enter against your income and any existing debt, to show how much room it would leave in your budget across the roughly 20 months most programs take.
These key factors affect executive MBA affordability
Total program cost varies enormously by school
Cost swings enormously by school. Plenty of solid EMBA programs run $70,000 to $150,000 total, paid over about 20 months of weekend and evening classes, while a handful of top-ranked programs like Wharton or Kellogg push past $200,000 for the same length of time.
Most programs also waive the GMAT or GRE for candidates with a decade or more of work experience, which tells you something about who they're built for: people already earning a salary, not students borrowing against a future one. That's exactly why employer sponsorship shows up so often here, since companies cover 50 to 100 percent of tuition for employees they want to keep on a leadership track.
Travel and residency requirements
Most EMBA programs bolt on periodic on-campus weekends and one or more international residencies, and none of it is optional. The $300 monthly travel and residency line here covers the flights, hotels, and international trips that are baked directly into the program calendar rather than left up to you.
Course materials and technology
It's the small stuff that gets missed in a tuition-only budget: case packs every term, a laptop or specific software the program requires, sometimes a subscription to a case-study database. None of it is expensive on its own. Add it up over 20 months and it's real money, which is why the $100 monthly course materials line exists here at all.
How to use your results
- If your result shows high risk, check with your employer first, since EMBA tuition sponsorship is far more common than for full-time MBA programs
- Compare programs by total cost including residencies, not just tuition, since travel requirements vary widely between schools
- Consider whether a part-time or online MBA at a lower total cost would meet your career goals if a top-tier EMBA isn't affordable right now
Ways to make an executive MBA more affordable
- Negotiate employer tuition sponsorship or a reimbursement agreement tied to a post-graduation retention commitment
- Ask about early-decision or alumni discounts, which some EMBA programs offer to reduce total tuition
- Choose a program with fewer required international residencies if travel costs are the bigger strain on your monthly budget
- Look into federal tax benefits like the Lifetime Learning Credit, which can offset a portion of tuition costs at tax time
