Step up to $500-$800 and you get more range and torque; premium boards with dual motors, 20-plus miles of range, and speeds pushing 25-30 mph run $800 to $1,800 or more. A lot of cities and states have specific rules about where these can legally be ridden, and it's worth checking before you buy one, not after.

Range and battery quality
Range and top speed track price closely: budget boards top out around 8-12 miles and 15 mph, while premium dual-motor boards push past 20 miles and 25 mph or faster. That battery pack is also a wearing part - most are rated for a few hundred charge cycles before range starts dropping off noticeably, and a replacement pack can run $150 to $400 when it does.
Safety gear
A helmet, wrist guards, and knee pads add another $100 to $200, and at 20-25 mph or faster, skipping them isn't a small risk. Riders who already skateboard or bike can usually reuse gear they already own.
Local riding rules
Plenty of cities ban electric skateboards from sidewalks outright, and some states classify anything above a certain speed or motor wattage as a moped requiring registration rather than a bike-style vehicle you can just ride. College campuses frequently layer on their own bans, too, so it's worth checking city, state, and campus rules before assuming the board you're eyeing is even legal to ride where you'll use it most.
