A plumber working on pipe fittings in a cabinet.

Most whole-house repipe jobs get triggered by the same thing: recurring leaks from old galvanized steel or 1980s-era polybutylene pipe that's finally failing for good. Total cost runs $4,000 to $15,000 depending mostly on pipe material and how hard the plumber has to work to reach the existing lines. Homeowners insurance typically only pays out if the trigger was sudden damage, like a burst pipe, not the slow corrosion that made repiping necessary in the first place, so most of this ends up paid out of pocket.

These key factors affect whole-house repipe affordability

Pipe material

PEX is the budget option, roughly $4,000 to $8,000 for an average house, and it's also the fastest to install since it flexes around framing instead of needing a joint at every turn. Copper runs $8,000 to $15,000, mostly because the material itself costs more and takes longer to solder into place. CPVC sits in between and shows up more often where local code favors it.

Wall and floor access

A slab foundation is the expensive scenario here: reaching pipe runs under the concrete means cutting the slab open and patching it afterward, on top of the plumbing itself. A crawlspace or unfinished basement is the easy case, since a plumber can often run new lines through open framing without touching a single wall.

Number of fixtures and bathrooms

Every bathroom, kitchen, and laundry hookup needs its own supply line, so a three-bath house costs meaningfully more to repipe than a one-bath house of the same size. Homes losing the fight against old galvanized pipe often need new shutoff valves and a pressure regulator in the same visit, since those parts are usually as worn out as the pipe itself.

How to use your results

  • Compare PEX against copper pricing to see how much material choice changes the total cost.
  • Add drywall patching and repainting costs separately if your plumber's quote doesn't include them.
  • Check whether repiping only the most problem-prone sections first fits your budget better than a full whole-house job.

Ways to make a whole-house repipe more affordable

  • Choose PEX piping over copper unless local code or personal preference specifically calls for copper.
  • Get multiple licensed plumber quotes, since repiping labor costs vary widely even within the same city.
  • Repipe in phases, starting with the sections showing active leaks or corrosion, if a full repipe isn't urgent.
  • Ask your plumber to reuse existing wall openings where fixtures line up, reducing the amount of drywall repair needed.
