Salt-free conditioners and dual-tank setups built for larger households or heavy water use run $2,000 to $5,000 or more, but they condition rather than soften, which matters if scale buildup on fixtures and water heaters is the actual problem.
Installation complexity
Installation typically adds $200 to $1,000 on top of the unit price, more if there's no floor drain near the water main and a plumber has to run new drainage for the brine tank. Worth checking before you buy, not after: some septic systems and homeowners associations restrict or flat-out ban softener discharge, since the concentrated salt brine can disrupt a septic tank's bacterial balance.

A 40-pound bag of salt or potassium chloride runs $5 to $10, and most households go through one every four to eight weeks, which adds up to a real ongoing cost well past the purchase price. The resin bed itself usually lasts 10 to 15 years before it needs replacing - easy to forget about when the sticker price is the only number you looked at going in.
