Antarctica is one of the priciest bucket-list trips there is: a 10- to 14-day expedition cruise typically starts in the five-figure range per person and can climb well past $20,000 depending on ship size and cabin. Almost every voyage departs from Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina, and crosses the Drake Passage to reach the continent, and the whole trip is only possible during the Southern Hemisphere summer, roughly November through March.
These key factors affect trip to Antarctica affordability
Cruise or expedition tier
Larger expedition ships carrying a few hundred passengers and running fewer daily landings start around $8,000 to $10,000 per person. Smaller premium vessels that land smaller groups more often and carry more naturalist staff per guest run $15,000 to $25,000 or more for a similar length trip. More time actually off the ship, not luxury for its own sake, is usually what the difference buys.
Getting to the departure point
Nearly every voyage departs from Ushuaia, which itself takes an international flight of $800 to $1,500 plus a connecting domestic leg to reach. Missing the ship because of a delayed connection is a real enough risk that many travelers build in a buffer night in Ushuaia before departure, which adds one more hotel stay to the total.
What's included versus extra
Cabin, meals, and the Zodiac excursions that get you ashore are almost always bundled into the base fare. Parka and boot rental is sometimes included and sometimes a line item, and add-ons like kayaking, camping on the ice, or diving typically run another $500 to $2,000 on top of the cruise fare itself.
Cabin category
An interior or lower-deck cabin gets you the same ship, itinerary, and landings as everyone else aboard. A suite with a private balcony on that same voyage can run two to three times the base fare, which makes cabin choice one of the biggest levers in the trip's total cost without changing anything about what you actually see in Antarctica.
How to use your results
- Add flights to Ushuaia or your departure point separately, since these aren't included in the cruise fare itself.
- Check whether gear rental like parkas and boots is included, since this is a common add-on that surprises first-time bookers.
- Choose your cabin category deliberately, since it's one of the largest swing factors in the total price on the same voyage.
- Include gratuities and optional excursions in your total, since these are typically billed separately from the base fare.
Ways to increase how much your trip to Antarctica you can afford
- Book a last-minute or repositioning cruise, which cruise lines sometimes discount 20% to 40% to fill remaining cabins.
- Choose an interior or lower-deck cabin instead of a suite, since the excursions and destination are the same regardless of cabin tier.
- Travel with a larger expedition ship instead of a premium small-ship operator, trading fewer excursions for a meaningfully lower price.
- Book during the shoulder months of the Antarctic season, November or March, rather than the peak December to January window.
