By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

Poured concrete is generally the least expensive patio material per square foot, pavers cost more but let you replace individual pieces if one cracks or settles, and natural stone sits at the highest end. It's a one-time project rather than an ongoing expense, so the estimate compares the total to roughly three months of your budget instead of a single month's paycheck.
These key factors affect patio costs
Income and expenses
A patio is one of the more flexible projects on this list, since there's rarely a deadline forcing the work, which puts the timing more in your control than a repair would be. That's worth being patient about: what's actually left after rent or mortgage, debt payments, and everyday costs is the number to build the project around, and if that number is tight this year, waiting a season to save toward it usually costs nothing but time.
Material: concrete vs. pavers vs. natural stone
The trade-off between materials runs in an unexpected direction: concrete is cheapest to install but priciest to fix, since a crack usually means patching an eyesore or replacing the whole slab, while pricier pavers can be lifted and reset individually if the ground underneath shifts. Natural stone costs the most of the three but needs the least help looking good, since each piece is naturally irregular rather than manufactured to match its neighbors.
Size and site prep
Square footage sets the baseline cost, but what's underneath and around the site often decides the final number. A yard that doesn't already slope away from the house needs grading and drainage work added in, and tearing out an old concrete pad, deck, or lawn before the new surface goes down is its own line item that's easy to miss when comparing quotes.
How to use your results
- Get quotes for a few different materials, since the price range is wide.
- Ask whether site prep and drainage work are included in the quote.
Ways to make a patio more affordable
- Get quotes from multiple contractors, since bids for the same scope can vary substantially.
- Choose poured concrete over pavers or natural stone if upfront cost matters most.
- Start with a smaller footprint and expand later if the budget is tight now.
