Turo pays hosts differently depending on the protection plan attached to a listing, and the spread is wide: pick the plan with the least coverage and Turo's cut starts around 15%, but opt into more insurance protection and that commission climbs toward 40% of each trip's earnings. Most hosts finance the vehicle they list, so turn your purchase price, down payment, interest rate, and loan term into a monthly payment first and check that number against your income.
These key factors affect Turo car affordability
Turo's commission and protection plan cut
The commission tiers exist because Turo is effectively selling insurance alongside marketplace access. Pick the lowest tier and you keep more of every booking, but you're on the hook for a bigger deductible if a renter damages the car. Pick the highest tier and Turo absorbs more of that risk in exchange for a larger cut of your earnings - there's no free option, only a trade between cash flow today and exposure down the road.
Realistic utilization, not best-case booking
Ignore the host success stories showing a car booked nearly every day. Real utilization for most hosts lands between 40% and 60% of available days, and it swings hard by market, vehicle type, and season - a convertible in Phoenix and a pickup truck near a construction corridor won't book the same way at all. Run the loan payment against the low end of that range, because an idle car still costs the full payment, insurance, and depreciation whether or not anyone rents it.
Accelerated depreciation and wear from renters
Dozens of different drivers put more miles and rougher wear on a car than one owner ever would, so Turo vehicles tend to depreciate faster and need more frequent repairs than a personal car with comparable mileage. Damage claims add another wrinkle, since resolving one through Turo's claims process can take weeks and leave the car unavailable to book in the meantime. SUVs and trucks generally hold value better under this kind of use than sedans, which is worth weighing against a 5- or 6-year loan term.
How to use your results
- Compare the monthly loan payment against realistic Turo earnings at 40% to 50% utilization, not the platform's optimistic income estimates.
- Include the 5% insurance cost and Turo's commission in your mental math even though the calculator focuses on the loan payment itself.
- If the numbers are tight, a shorter loan term or larger down payment reduces the monthly payment you need the car to cover.
Ways to make a Turo car more affordable
- Choose a popular, in-demand vehicle class for your market (compact SUVs and trucks often book more consistently than niche or luxury cars) to boost utilization.
- Put down a larger down payment to lower the monthly payment the Turo income needs to cover.
- Select a mid-tier protection plan that balances Turo's commission against your own liability exposure rather than defaulting to the priciest option.
- Start with a shorter loan term if your budget allows a higher payment, since it reduces total interest paid over the life of a depreciating asset.
