By Alex Diaz · How we calculate this

A camper van conversion is often financed with an RV loan rather than a standard auto loan, which can stretch the term to 10 or 15 years but typically comes with a higher interest rate than financing a regular car. This calculator combines the van's price, down payment, interest rate, and loan term you enter into a monthly payment and weighs that against your income and credit profile to gauge how risky the purchase would be.
These key factors affect camper van affordability
Income and expenses
A camper van payment still has to share your budget with rent or a mortgage, a car payment if you keep a separate daily driver, and anything else you owe, so it gets weighed against your income together with any other debt you've logged rather than judged on its own.
Credit score
RV and specialty vehicle loans are underwritten similarly to auto loans, and rates vary a lot by credit tier. A lower score typically means a higher rate for the same van, which is why it nudges your risk score up here too.
New build vs. pre-converted
A factory or professionally converted van, built on a chassis like the Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or RAM ProMaster, costs noticeably more than a base cargo van you convert yourself over time. Financing usually only covers the vehicle itself too, not a DIY build-out you do afterward, so tools, insulation, and interior materials are typically a separate, out-of-pocket cost.
Down payment and loan term
A bigger down payment shrinks the loan and helps offset depreciation, which can be steep in the first few years. A longer term lowers the payment but stretches that risk out over more years.
Ongoing ownership costs
Insurance, fuel, campground or storage fees, and maintenance on the living systems (plumbing, electrical, propane) are recurring costs on top of the loan payment that are easy to underestimate.
How to use your results
Try adjusting the inputs to see what actually moves your risk score:
- Down payment - a bigger down payment shrinks the loan and helps offset early depreciation.
- Loan term - compare a shorter term's higher payment against a longer term's lower one.
- Ongoing costs - price out storage, insurance, and maintenance separately, since they're easy to underestimate.
Ways to increase how much camper van you can afford
- Pay down existing debt before taking on a camper van loan.
- Consider a base cargo van you convert yourself in stages instead of a fully finished build.
- Save for a bigger down payment to shrink the loan and offset early depreciation.
- Shop your loan across a few lenders, since specialty vehicle loan rates vary by lender.
